Map Controls & Editing
Desktop provides comprehensive map management capabilities:
Full Map Interface:
- Leaflet map controls: Zoom in/out, pan, rotate, switch base layers (satellite, terrain, street view)
- Drawing tools: Create locations, subdivisions, and features by drawing boundaries directly on the map
- Editing tools: Modify existing boundaries, move features, adjust subdivisions
- Measurement tools: Calculate area of paddocks, distance between locations, perimeter of boundaries
- Layer controls: Toggle visibility of animals, locations, biosecurity zones, GPS tracks
- Search: Find locations by name or GPS coordinates
Creating Locations:
- Click "Create Location" button
- Click points on map to define boundary polygon
- System calculates area automatically
- Add location name, type, and details
- Save to create new location with precise GPS boundaries
Subdividing Locations:
- Select parent location
- Click "Create Subdivision" button
- Draw subdivision boundary within parent location
- System validates subdivision fits within parent
- Name subdivision (paddock name, enclosure number, territory identifier)
- Save to create subdivision
Adding Location Features:
- Water points: Click location, mark water source position
- Gates: Mark entry/exit points for movement tracking
- Feeding stations: Identify feeding locations for resource management
- Shelter/Infrastructure: Document buildings, shelters, veterinary facilities
- Each feature has GPS coordinates for precise positioning
Visualizing Animal Locations:
- See all animals plotted on map at their current locations
- Click animal marker to view quick summary (ID, species, health status)
- Click through to full animal record
- Filter by species, health status, age range to highlight specific animals
- View movement history as lines showing animal's path over time
Biosecurity Zone Mapping:
- Define security zones (high-security, medium-security, public access)
- Color-code zones by risk level
- Set access rules for each zone (who can enter, PPE requirements, visitor restrictions)
- Visualize zone compliance (which zones have active protocols, recent assessments)
Mouse-Based Precision:
- Desktop mouse allows pixel-perfect boundary drawing
- Zoom in to fine-tune boundaries around obstacles, roads, or natural features
- Precise placement of features (water points, gates) at exact GPS coordinates
- Easier to create complex shapes (irregular paddocks, winding stream boundaries) than touch-based drawing
Desktop-Specific Workflows
Studbook Pedigree Management:

Screen Real Estate
Wide Screens Enable:
- Side-by-side comparisons (two animals, two locations, two time periods)
- Persistent context (navigation visible while working on content)
- More information visible without scrolling
- Reduced cognitive load (see more at once, remember less)
Example - Animal Record View:
- Desktop: See animal details, health history, treatment records, and location all simultaneously on one screen
- Mobile: Scroll vertically through tabs or cards to see each section separately
More screen space means less navigation, faster comprehension, and more efficient workflows for complex tasks.
